The Influence of the Middle Class - A Classical Blog Exhibit

Image
The Middle Class  Starting in the early 1700's the rise of the middle class began. Trades men and women, merchants, artisans, and so many more people were realized to be major contributors to society that everyone knew, and it began to be reflected in art pieces all over the world. People were usually ranked into social classes depending on how much money they made or what their family ties were, but in the 1700's the tides began to change, and people were valued more and more for what skills they had and for what trades or professions they had and what they could do for those around them.  J oseph Wright, British - 1734 - 1797 -  The Corinthian Maid 1782-1784 - Oil on Canvas This piece really stood out to me because of the ambient lighting shown onto the two subjects and when I first looked at this painting, I did not know what they were doing, but one of my sources explains it well "The girl was the daughter of a potter in Corinth. Her boyfriend was about to embark on

The people of  Marajoara A small island spanning 183 miles long and 124 miles wide in the Amazon River off of the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil lies the island of  Marajoara. " Marajó is an island at the mouth of the Amazon River. It is the largest river island in the world. It is bigger than many Caribbean islands (like Puerto Rico and Jamaica) and bigger than some countries (like Belgium and Switzerland)." (Albert)  This island was created by sediment deposits from the river and was once inhabited by a tribe of inventive, tradition creating, and artistically talented people. The most memorable art of their culture that is still preserved and practiced to this day is their pottery crafting. I will be displaying 3 pieces of these amazing works and talking about how and why they were created and what they could have been used for.  " Studies on Marajó began to take shape in the 19 th  century and archaeologists have claimed signs of human activity on the island as early as 10

Feminism in the Post-Modern Era

Image
The 1980's and Beyond  The talent of women artists began to stand out and become appreciated by art goers across the globe. Society is waking up and women were being taken seriously and more and more of their art began showing up in well-known places like galleries and museums alongside their male competition, but the race was becoming fairer.  As one of my sources states This was the time that art was getting to be not only dynamic, but shocking and inappropriate as well. Most art in history is created from a male perspective. Masculinity was still a factor of art but it was now shared with femininity. Postmodern feminism paved the way for ordinary subjects to become extraordinary and transformed art." (Parrish).  My 3 Pieces of Analyzation  One of the artists that used her art to spread the message about sexual assault and her own experience with it is Tracy Emin. Her art style really caught my eye and the goal of her pieces of wanting to spread awareness and to not "s

Romantic Era Compare & Contrast

Romantic Landscape Era Upper Fall of the Reichenbach: Rainbow  (1810) by J. M. W. Turner This piece really stood out to me because even though so much of the same color of brown and whites are used to depict the mountainside it is still full of contrast and texture and the depth is shown so brilliantly with how small the human in the lower left corner looks and the magnitude of the rainbow show with it arching over the mountainside. The emotions I feel when seeing this are wonder and awe, it reinforces how vast and beautiful nature is. As one of my sources states when talking about landscape painting during this time period " These artists emphasized transient and dramatic effects of light, atmosphere, and colour to portray a dynamic natural world capable of evoking awe and grandeur."(Britannica).  John Constable - British -1776 - 1837 - Wivenhoe Park, Essex   1816 Oil On Canvas - Widener Collection I chose this piece because of the rich color contrasts and depth of the scen

Renaissance - Baroque - Art Analysis

La Visite à la grand-mère  (Visit to Grandmother 1645-1648) by Louis Le Nain I was drawn to this Baroque time period piece by Louis Le Nain because of several art elements. The rich colors: especially the reds in the clothing, the use of the tenebrism technique which is described as " Tenebrism   was another technique used by several Baroque painters, popularized and believed to have started by Caravaggio. Although it is like  chiaroscuro , it mainly focuses on the darker areas of a painting. The term originates from the Italian word,  tenebroso , which in turn originates from the Latin,  tenebra , meaning “darkness”. Other words related to this terms are gloomy and mysterious. It sought to create what is referred to as the “spotlight” effect, also called “dramatic illumination”."(Artincontext) The way the artist displayed the shadows in the room within the corners really highlights the people in the middle of the room and the casting of the light on the floor from the nei

Renaissance Art Analysis

Boccaccio, Dante, Petrarca By: Giorgio Vasari "The 1544 CE painting by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574 CE) known as the 'Portrait of Six Tuscan Poets'. The poets are (left to right): Cino da Pistoia, Giuttone d'Arezzo,   Petrarch ,  Giovanni Boccaccio ,  Dante Alighieri and Guido Cavalcanti."  (Art) . This piece really stands out to me because all the contrast of the different colors of clothing and items in the painting is so rich for the eyes to view. The different pinks of the gown on the man holding the book, the green of the tablecloth, the red of the head and neck pieces on some of subjects in the painting and the dark background really highlights these colors. I also really enjoy how the different textures are painted so realistic and delicate looking, I can imagine what the linen of the clothes feels like or how the leafy crowns on their heads would be smooth and cooling to the touch, when a painting has elements like this where I can imagine how my senses would

This beautiful piece created in 2022 is titled ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAINS  by Melanie Biehle. It is made from acrylic paint on wood and measures  12W x 12H x 1.625 D inches as stated on her website .  I was drawn to this piece because it is made by a Pacific Northwest artist and the colors and textures were very appealing to me. I also like the dark and winter like mood of the piece. The emotions I feel this piece gives off are wonder and mellowness. The mixture of dark and light blue and gray hues is like a winter day and the contrast of water and mountains showing depth of the scene makes the viewer wonder where this is and what is the viewpoint of where it was created. The tones make me feel relaxed and like it is a cold winter day and I am wrapped up in a blanket and looking out the window of a cabin.  I also really enjoy the texture of the paint where some of it seems to extend out from the wood and appear grainy, additionally how the lines and warm tan color above the mountains crea
